Functional Specifications of Multilevel Highway
نویسنده
چکیده
People reason hierarchically when they navigate highway networks. The hierarchical structure is induced by a sequence of tasks starting with route planning, continuing with wayfinding instructions, and leading to the actual driving process. In order to perform adequately, people need to map highway features and navigation actions from one task level to the next. What exactly are these features, actions, and mappings? To answer this question, the paper uses a formal algebraic model developed in the functional language Haskell. It defines an inheritance hierarchy for objects and operations in highway navigation. The results represent a case study for the support of modeling and software engineering processes in non-trivial applications through functional language specifications.

In a continuing effort to provide a solution, engineers in the Construction and Technology Division (C&T) of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) are studying alternative bridge deck designs. C&T engineers are six years into a study which could eventually save Michigan motorists a considerable amount of tax dollars. The study compares the performance of isotropic bridge decks with d...
متن کاملSuburbanization and Transportation in the Monocentric Model
This paper presents a version of the monocentric city model that incorporates heterogeneous commuting speeds by introducing radial commuting highways. This model implies that metropolitan area population spreads out along new highways, which are positively valued by residents. Simulations of conservative specifications of the model imply that each additional highway ray causes about a 10 percen...
